Three-row SUV shopping usually starts with a short list, and the Pilot is on almost everyone's. It has been the family-hauler default for years, and defaults have a way of going unchecked.
We checked. We lined up the 2026 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD against the 2026 Volkswagen Atlas SE with Technology 4MOTION using the published numbers: both three-row SUVs, both with all-wheel drive, both aimed at the same driveway. The differences show up fast.
Torque You Can Use From a Stoplight
The Atlas makes 273 lb-ft of torque, and its turbocharged engine delivers all of it at just 1,600 RPM. The Pilot EX-L's V6 makes 262 lb-ft and needs 5,000 RPM to get there.
That gap in the spec sheet is a gap you feel. Peak pull nearly off idle means the Atlas moves out the moment you ask, with seven seats full and the I-95 on-ramp shrinking ahead of you. Waiting for 5,000 RPM in a family SUV is a different experience.
Walk Up With Full Hands, Leave With a Closed Liftgate
The Atlas SE with Technology includes a hands-free Easy Open & Close power liftgate: a kick under the bumper opens it, another closes it, groceries and car seats notwithstanding. On the Pilot EX-L, hands-free operation is not offered; its power tailgate still needs a free hand or the key fob.
Better Mileage, City and Highway
The EPA estimates the Atlas SE with Technology 4MOTION at 20 mpg city and 26 highway. The Pilot EX-L AWD comes in at 19 and 25. The bigger-feeling Volkswagen wins both columns, and over years of school runs and road trips, single mpg points add up in the right direction.
A Full Extra Year of Warranty, Twice the Maintenance
Every 2026 Atlas carries a 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty plus a 2-year/20,000-mile Carefree Maintenance program at no extra charge. The Pilot's basic warranty runs 3 years/36,000 miles, with 1 year/12,000 miles of scheduled maintenance included.
One extra year and 14,000 more miles of coverage, and twice the included maintenance. For plenty of families, the ownership math is where the decision gets made.

Drive Both, Back to Back
You're probably going to test drive the Pilot anyway. Add a quick stop at Curran Volkswagen and take a 2026 Atlas out right after it. Load something into the back with your hands full, feel where the torque arrives on the on-ramp, and compare what year four of ownership looks like on each window sticker.
The Pilot earned its place on the short list a long time ago. The 2026 Atlas answers today's checklist: more torque delivered sooner, a liftgate that works when your hands don't, better EPA estimates in both columns, a longer warranty, and twice the included maintenance.
